Geometry Regents Tutoring
Inquire About Geometry Regents TutoringThe Geometry Regents is one of three math Regents exams that New York State requires for high school graduation—and for many students in Brooklyn and Manhattan, it is the first truly high-stakes standardized math test they will face. A strong score does more than satisfy a diploma requirement. It factors directly into course grades, influences placement in advanced math classes, and can play a role in college admissions. At Honors Prep, we provide private, one-on-one Geometry Regents tutoring designed to build genuine understanding of the material, not just exam-day shortcuts. Every student we work with receives a tailored preparation plan based on a diagnostic assessment of their specific strengths and weaknesses.
What Is the Geometry Regents?
The Geometry Regents is a standardized examination administered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) that assesses students on the Common Core geometry curriculum taught in New York high schools. Every student pursuing a Regents Diploma must pass at least one math Regents exam, and Geometry is one of three options alongside Algebra I and Algebra II. For students at competitive Brooklyn and Manhattan high schools, the Geometry Regents often carries additional weight: many schools factor the Regents score into the final course grade, and some require a mastery-level score of 85 or above for weighted GPA credit.
The exam itself is divided into four parts. Part I consists of 24 multiple-choice questions, each worth 2 points, for a total of 48 points. Parts II through IV contain 7 constructed-response questions that require students to show their work and justify their reasoning. Part II includes short-response questions worth 2 points each, Part III includes questions worth 4 points each, and Part IV features one extended-response question worth 6 points. The total raw score is 86 points, which NYSED then converts to a scaled score between 0 and 100 using a conversion chart that changes slightly from administration to administration.
The constructed-response sections are where many students lose the most ground. Partial credit is available on every open-ended question, but only if work is shown clearly and mathematical reasoning is communicated precisely. This is why our tutoring places heavy emphasis on proof-writing, diagram labeling, and the structured communication of geometric reasoning—skills that are rarely drilled in the classroom but are essential for maximizing points on exam day.
2026 Geometry Regents Exam Dates
New York State administers the Geometry Regents three times per year. All exams begin at 9:15 AM. The 2026 dates are:
- January 22, 2026
- June 17, 2026
- August 13, 2026
Students are permitted to take the Geometry Regents more than once. If your child scored below their target on a previous administration, they can retake the exam at the next available date and use the higher score. This is a meaningful opportunity—students who fell short of mastery in January, for example, can use the spring semester to address specific gaps and sit for the June exam with a stronger foundation. We work with families across Brooklyn and Manhattan to build preparation timelines around whichever exam date makes the most sense for their child.
What Makes Our Approach Different
Most test prep companies approach the Geometry Regents with a generic playbook: a standardized set of worksheets, a fixed sequence of topics, and group instruction that moves at a pace dictated by the class rather than the individual student. We take a fundamentally different approach.
Every student begins with a diagnostic assessment—a full-length practice Regents exam that we score and analyze in detail. We don't just look at the overall score. We break down performance by topic strand and question type so we can see exactly where your child stands: Are they losing points on coordinate geometry proofs but strong on circle theorems? Do they understand congruence conceptually but struggle to execute two-column proofs under time pressure? The diagnostic tells us, and from there we build a preparation plan that targets their specific weaknesses rather than reteaching material they've already mastered.
Throughout the tutoring engagement, we administer periodic practice exams aligned with NYSED standards. These serve a dual purpose: they give parents a clear, data-driven view of their child's progress, and they give students repeated, realistic exposure to the format, timing, and pressure of the actual exam. By the time your child sits for the real Geometry Regents, the experience should feel familiar.
Key Topics We Cover
The Geometry Regents curriculum is broad. Our tutors are prepared to address every topic on the exam, but we prioritize based on what your child's diagnostic reveals. Here are the eight core topic areas we cover:
Congruence
Triangle congruence criteria (SAS, ASA, AAS, SSS, HL), CPCTC, and formal two-column and paragraph proofs that demonstrate why two figures are congruent.
Similarity
Similarity criteria (AA, SAS, SSS), proportional reasoning with similar figures, and applications involving scale factor, indirect measurement, and dilations.
Right Triangles & Trigonometry
The Pythagorean Theorem, special right triangles (30-60-90 and 45-45-90), trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent), and solving for unknown sides and angles in right triangles.
Circles
Arc length, area of sectors, central and inscribed angles, chords, tangent lines, secant-tangent relationships, and equations of circles in standard form.
Geometric Properties
Parallel lines cut by transversals, angle relationships (alternate interior, corresponding, co-interior), polygon interior and exterior angle sums, and properties of parallelograms, rectangles, rhombi, and trapezoids.
Measurement & Dimensions
Area and perimeter of two-dimensional figures, volume of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres, cross-sections of three-dimensional figures, and Cavalieri's Principle.
Coordinate Geometry
Distance formula, midpoint formula, slope, equations of lines and circles on the coordinate plane, partitioning line segments, and proving geometric properties using coordinates.
Transformations & Constructions
Reflections, rotations, translations, and dilations with precise notation, composition of transformations, symmetry, and compass-and-straightedge constructions including bisectors, perpendicular lines, and inscribed polygons.
Test Strategy & Pacing
Content knowledge alone does not guarantee a strong Geometry Regents score. The exam is three hours long, and how a student allocates that time across four distinct sections can be just as important as how well they understand the material. We dedicate a significant portion of our tutoring to test-taking strategy—the skills that separate a student who knows the content from a student who performs well on the exam.
Time management. Part I (multiple-choice) should take roughly 45 to 60 minutes, leaving a full two hours for the constructed-response sections and review. We train students to pace themselves through Part I without rushing, flag questions they're unsure about, and return to them after completing the rest of the exam.
Proof-writing approach. The constructed-response questions in Parts II through IV require clear, logical reasoning supported by precise mathematical language. Many students understand the geometry but lose points because their written explanations are incomplete or disorganized. We teach a structured approach to proofs and open-ended responses: state what you're given, identify what you need to show, and build your argument step by step with explicit references to theorems and postulates. Partial credit is always available, so even on a problem a student cannot fully solve, a well-organized response can earn meaningful points.
Point allocation strategy. Not all questions are worth the same number of points. We teach students to be strategic about where they invest their time. A single Part IV question is worth 6 points—the same as three Part II questions. Understanding this encourages students to budget their time appropriately and avoid spending too long on any one problem in the earlier sections.
Flexible Scheduling, No Packages
High school students in Brooklyn and Manhattan lead busy lives—between school, extracurriculars, college prep, and everything else on their plates. That's why we keep our scheduling simple and flexible.
We offer pay-as-you-go tutoring with no required packages, no minimum number of sessions, and no long-term commitments. You book sessions as you need them, and you're never locked into a contract. Our tutors are generally available seven days a week, including evenings and weekends, so we can work around your child's schedule rather than asking them to work around ours.
We offer in-home tutoring throughout Brooklyn—including Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Boerum Hill, and Prospect Heights—as well as across Manhattan. For families who prefer remote sessions, we offer online tutoring via Zoom with the same one-on-one attention. Many of our students use a hybrid approach: in-person sessions when schedules allow, and online sessions when time is tight. Whatever works best for your family, we will accommodate.
If your child is also preparing for the SAT or other standardized tests, we can coordinate their Geometry Regents prep with their broader test preparation schedule to make the most of their time.
