How we vet our tutors

Families trust Honors Prep because of the stringent standards we hold our roster to. Every tutor completes these four steps:

  1. Résumé

    Send a résumé. A cover letter is welcome but optional.

  2. A real conversation

    A video interview about how you actually teach: the students you have worked with, the strategies you use, and what your experience has taught you. It is also your chance to ask questions of us.

  3. References

    Two references from parents of students you have taught. Families describe a tutor’s work more candidly than any résumé does.

  4. Background check

    After accepting an offer, and before meeting with any student, every new tutor completes a background check, which we re-verify periodically, and acknowledges our safeguarding policy. We also verify your educational credentials at this point.

We do not screen applicants purely by test scores or university names. A 1590 on the SAT doesn't make someone a teacher. What we look for is deep teaching experience, described in real detail. We have passed on candidates with polished résumés who couldn't speak concretely about their own work. In-person work requires being based in New York City.

You pick your rates for in-person and remote tutoring. Billing runs through us, and you are paid promptly via direct deposit.

Choose your students

We propose matches that fit your specializations, your teaching style, and your availability. You decide which opportunities to take.

Teach your own way

You are the expert. We match you with students because of the methods you have developed, and we want you to use them.

We handle the rest

Vetting, matching, and billing all run through Honors Prep. In the rare instance that a match isn’t working, we resolve it and the family stays supported.

Materials covered

If a student needs a textbook or practice materials, Honors Prep will reimburse you for the cost.

Matches that last

Most engagements run three months or longer, and many students stay with the same tutor for a year or more. Families come to us for a tutor they can keep.

The tutors who thrive here are the ones who are passionate about teaching, and are committed to working with students on a consistent basis, long enough to see the progress. For most of our tutors, teaching is their main profession, not simply a side hustle.

Subjects & formats

Honors Prep is known for its work in test preparation, and most of our tutoring jobs are for SHSAT tutors, SAT and ACT tutors, and ISEE tutors. If you tutor something we haven't listed, mention it in the application; the "Other" field is read as carefully as the checkboxes.

Our in-person tutor jobs are concentrated in Brooklyn, with occasional placements in Manhattan and Queens. In-person sessions typically happen at the student's home, or sometimes at the public library or at a café. Roughly half of all sessions run online, and the balance between in-person and remote work is largely each tutor's choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum commitment?

No. You decide how many students to take on and when you’re available. Some of our tutors carry a full roster; others take just a few students.

Where do sessions happen?

In-person sessions usually take place at the student’s home, and sometimes at the public library or at a café, depending on the student’s age and the family’s preference. Other sessions happen online. Tutors working in person must be based in New York City. Every tutor is interviewed and reference-checked, and completes a background check after accepting an offer, before meeting any student.

Do I need a certain test score or degree to apply?

No. What we need to see is real teaching experience and the ability to talk about it in detail. In the interview we ask about the students you’ve taught and the strategies you use, and references from families carry more weight with us than a score report.

How does pay work?

You’re an independent contractor and you set your own rates. Billing runs through Honors Prep, so payment arrives promptly via direct deposit, and you never have to chase an invoice. Supplemental materials, including textbooks and practice books, are covered by Honors Prep.
